Is it working?

edited January 2014 in Support

Things seemed to work out of the box for the first two days, then problems, updated macminer to the most recent…and the graph looks similar to when things were paying out…, but no more payouts...

Any clues?

Thanks!

  • P2Pool works quite differently from most pools with high difficulty shares, which means you were actually quite lucky to find a payout share in the first two days with Jalapeño speeds - If you look at one of the bitcoin mining calculators like this one you should see that the payout would have been more than you would have earned over 2 days on average.

Unless you're a gambler I'd suggest signing up at Triple Mining which is a conventional pool with lower but more regular payouts
  • Is it working is right:

I've been using it for a couple of days now, and I get things like:

[2014-01-04 20:56:29] Stratum from pool 0 requested work update

    5s:  0.0 avg:  0.0 u:  0.0  h/s | A:0 R:0+0(none) HW:0/none

    5s:  0.0 avg:  0.0 u:  0.0  h/s | A:0 R:0+0(none) HW:0/none

    5s:  0.0 avg:  0.0 u:  0.0  h/s | A:0 R:0+0(none) HW:0/none

    5s:  0.0 avg:  0.0 u:  0.0  h/s | A:0 R:0+0(none) HW:0/none

but I'm not sure what its actually doing.  I have 0.0 MH with 0 accepted and 0 rejected.  Is the thing working?
  • definitely not mining there - are you trying to GPU mine litecoin? If so make sure enable GPU mining and use scrypt and please post the beginning of the output where it talks about initialising devices and pools

  • Why edited down? from the deleted posts it looks as though you're mining, but you should either switch to
or switch to Litecoin mining - it's not really worth BTC mining any more!
  • Oh and play with the intensity - too high will crash your Mac but the higher the faster you mine
  • I realized that I forgot to enable scrypt, so I deleted those and then posted after it was enabled.

I'm not sure the difference between litecoin and btc?

    Now it says:

  • That looks like it's working - you did set up your pool settings properly right? Entered LTC and BTC address I'm guessing? Litecoin is similar to Bitcoin, but transactions are supposed to be faster and there will be 4 times as many Litecoin as Bitcoin. Where mining is concerned, they use different algorithms - SHA-256 and scrypt - for solving blocks.
  • I think so.  Here's hoping it works...
  • I am not getting anywhere.  Whether is it worth it ot not I am trying to use a Macbook and bfgminer to do bitcoin mining.  Its a quad core I7 with a Geoforce 650 built in.  I would like to see what I can generate with the GPU before I invest in more sophisticated hardware.  It does nothing (0 hashrate) and I really don't get any useful information.  Output on debug setting is below:

    Any Help would be appreciated.
  • does it say anything about the GPU or OCL? Turn off debug output - enable GPU is enabled right?
  • Not sure what keeps happening to my posts ...... Yes, enable GPU is checked.

The above is the entire output of the program, after that is just sits there for as long as I can stand it. If I don't have debug on it stops after "Loaded configuration file ....". I turned on debug hoping to find some more info but only got the other errors which I don't think are really even errors, just couldn't find any USB devices since I don't have any. On my windows machines I use a command like bfgminer -S opencl:auto -o poolname -O user:pass to start it so it will find my GPUs (after installing open cl drivers). Of course since opencl is an apple thing, there is no such thing on the mac. I have tried adding -S opencl:auto and some other variations to the options with no luck. Thanks for the quick reply, any more suggestions to troubleshoot this?
  • I had to give it up last night. Tonight I fired it up determined to figure out what was happening and like a few other people right out of the box it started working perfectly! I have no idea why it wasn't working before. It started using my CPU, the geoforce and I guess it has an Intel GPU in it too it us using. It runs about 35MH/s which isn't bad for a year old laptop. It was making the bottom of the case a little hotter than I would like so I backed the intensity down to -1 where it generates about 31MH/s and it seems to be running at a pretty nice temperature. Wish I had found this app when btc mining was a little easier. At least now if I want to hook an ASIC up to it I know it will work. Thanks so much for all your work.
  • it's a pleasure! Thanks for your report, next to some others I'm starting to think Nvidia GPU's sometimes fail to detect but would work on restart. Sometimes I find it doesn't detect all 4 USB miners I'm using but restarting the miner it detects it. It does have to be said that the detection method is imperfect!
  • I am having this problem now myself.  Any idea as to what was causing it?  This is what I see:

  • So it was working before but isn't any more? Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder and make sure there are no bfgminer processes running, it could be that MacMiner was force quit and it kept running?

If that's not it, please let me know anything else that happened since the last time you ran it OK (updated it or whatever)
  • This is my first time setting it up (and first time attempting to mine).  Of course, after a system reboot, it has started working.  I have no idea why...
  • Ah, did you by any chance try running Asteroid? It disables the default USB Serial drivers on Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks which breaks some other software, but resets after a restart.
  • I haven't run Asteroid...  I woke my machine from sleep this morning and am now seeing the same issue.  I restarted and no joy.  Should I be running Asteroid?  I'm not running any ASICS or anything... this is all on my box.
  • I also updated to the most recent version.
  • No way, MacMiner is better :) it was the USB error that made me wonder but it's probably just talking about the modem. You should try enabling quiet output in the miner settings. Is it mining normally besides outputting that message?
  • No, it's not mining at all.  When the errors went away yesterday, I got some solid mining in.  Nothing today since the errors are back.
  • You may need to check Energy Saver in Settings and make sure the Automatically switch GPU is unchecked it could be not working when the discreet graphics are used, also on cards that are borderline able to mine sometimes they won't start but restarting the machine/quitting everything else will help if the first suggestion doesn't.

Have you checked out the CPU miner window? That can often be more effective than GPU mining for Alt coins.
  • Ok, so, Energy Saver settings have been updated to make sure the GPU isn't being switched.  I restarted and it's still not mining.

CPU mining is failing but giving me a different error:

    [2014-02-13 09:52:18] Binding thread 0 to cpu 0

Using triplemining right now.  Do you have suggestions for a different pool / alt coin I should try?
  • What GPU do you have? Was the setting just the 'automatically switch GPU' one that tells you the better one will be used all the time if you disable it? You could try lowering the intensity too.

Definitely no point mining Bitcoin on CPU. A nice starter coin is QuarkCoin because there are so many you can earn a whole one quickly, but Litecoin and Vertcoin may have more lasting value. Use the new pool settings in preferences instead of the old pool setup panel!
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB.  I assume I can run both CPU and GPU, if I ever get it working...?

Just checked the pool prefs and they have the correct info.  Btw, the save button doesn't seem to do anything, but that's probably just a UI issue.
  • Also, suggested LTC mining pools?
  • edited February 2014
Yeah you can run both at once - try adding -d 0 in manual flags to force it to use the GPU? can you post the beginning of the log where it talks about OCL please?

The save button does actually save, but doesn't show anything in the UI - coming next version!

I like P2Pool but it's not great for slower mining, I don't know the reputation of the others well to back them but there's a good list here https://litecoin.info/Mining_pool_comparison

OzCoin I think a lot of people like
