MacMiner crashes on startup

  • Yeah the bug is quite critical, since a one time only launch is what it will remain then. I dare to say, I am quite skilled at Objective-C/Cocoa/iOS. I was able to run the program in Xcode without any trouble (which is quite unusual).

Your code looks like this is something I would like to be of help of. If you're interested I will take a look. I need a little distraction from the Bitcoin company I co-founded.

If you rather keep it a solo-project, no offence taken. I also won't be available all the time as you can imagine.
  • Sorry all to drop off, - and sorry my screenshot did not copy-paste above - but I just started using bfgminer (Nwoolls compilation and instructions) out of terminal.  This issue forced me to learn some commands and to make do with that paleolithic GUI - but it worked fine - fast even.  But I kept experimenting with my other macs and I probably discovered the same fix that Oemb1905 did:  reinstalling and/or starting from scratch.  Seems like MacMiner still does not want to initialize my NanoFuries (Ice).  Recognizes them - but that's about it.  I will copy the logs when I get a chance.  And thanks to dtrog for your sleuth work on this sticky wicket. -Jeffox
  • dtrog, your help would be hugely appreciated, I do hope this will become a community maintained project and there are actually bounties out for commits to github that get merged in to the main branch so you will be rewarded too :)

You can email me if you want to discuss anything in person
  • The github is up to date today - I'd also appreciate it if any of the people who've experienced the crashing issue could let me know whether it continues with 1.5.20b2!
  • Hi there. I can confirm that with 1.5.20gm the crash on startup (Index 8 out of bounds; string length 0) no longer occurs. I'm the person who posted the original message in this thread.

However, FPCG/ASCI miner in 1.5.20gm doesn't work. At least not with my Butterfly Labs ASIC miner. So 1.5.20gm is of no help. I went back to 1.5.18e which does work with my BFL miner.

1.5.18e crashes on startup as per the original problem. I am able to get it to work by deleting the bfgurls.conf file each time before starting MacMiner.
  • Very confusing that it doesn't work with the new version - try taking the /MacMiner.app/Contents/Resources/bfgminer folder from 1.5.18 and putting that in the 1.5.20gm version and see whether that works for you? I'm using the latest version with a jalapeño though…
  • No putting the bfgminer from 1.5.18 into  the 1.5.20 Resources folder didn't help. Still doesn't work. Hash rate stays at 0Mh.

I verified it was using the older bfgminer version (3.10.0). Curious ..
  • Ok I did a diff on the logs between 1.5.18 and 1.5.20. With 1.5.20 there is a 30 second pause after which it logs a 'Stratum connect' error. Here is the relevant section from the log:

    [2014-05-22 12:00:25] Testing pool 0 stratum stratum+tcp://cryptominer.org:9332
     [2014-05-22 12:00:25] initiate_stratum with sockbuf=0x0
[2014-05-22 12:00:55] Stratum connect failed with TLS to pool 0: Operation timed out after 30103 milliseconds with 0 out of 0 bytes received

  • And I have one last comment for you..

It appears the 'Stratum connect filed with TLS' error is not fatal. Because later in the log it seems to connect ok (presumably over non-ssl). But it tries twice over TLS meaning there is a startup delay of 60 seconds. It shouldn't be trying TLS. My pool url is http:// not https://.

As for the 'not working' problem. If I look at the API window it seems as though it is doing stuff. The MH average is "56982". And the Accepted and Rejected counts are increasing. But in the FPCG/ASIC Miner window, is says "0 Mh" and there is no text next to Accepted: and Rejected:. Also in the miner window the log just stops after a while and I see no new entries.
  • Hmm, sorry for the bugs, MacMiner is using the latest bfgminer from github which must account for the bugs but it supports more devices than the last official version - hopefully this will get a bit more graceful soon!
  • I don't think the bug is with bfgminer. I put the older bfgminer into the 1.5.20 .app folder as you suggested and it still didn't work.
