I have a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) that's been sitting around at home not being used for ages.
I'd like to run xmr-stak 2.2.0 (with 0.0 donation level) on it but I'm not sure how to compile it.
Should I use Homebrew and/or Xcode and/or Command Line Tools?
Any help is appreciated.

Yes, you'll need homebrew. There are instruction here: https://github.com/fireice-uk/xmr-stak/blob/master/doc/compile_MacOS.md
On that page it implies they can't get it working with AMD GPUs at this stage?
This iMac has an AMD GPU.
On macminer.fabulouspanda.com/commandline/xmrstakamd/ it looks like you got it working?
I really don't recommend using xmr-stak on an iMac as they're prone to overheating and it's a very intensive miner. But yes the newer versions of it do compile for Mac, the version I compiled was the dev branch just before it was published as 2.2
Why do Macs overheat when faced with a GPU intensive task? Don't they have any safety feature that'll throttle down the GPU if it overheats to avoid thermal damage like on PCs? What miner would you recommend using instead of xmr-stak that'll do around the same H/s?
They do have features which down clock chips or rev up the fans, but it's very rare for any process to work the GPU this hard for that long and Apple prioritises thin, quiet running machines over really pro capable ones so unless you're running an eGPU or an old cheese grater Mac Pro the risk of overheating the GPU and running in to graphics glitches is quite high. If you have your heart set on XMR mining I'd say stick to using xmr-stak for CPU mining. You could get away with GPU mining some less intensive algorithms.
This is very interesting.
As mentioned the new version of XMR-Stak combines both cpu and gpu mining but the instructions for mac have no support for AMD currently.
Have you got round this?
I think my card is a 5770, an old card now but if it can bump figures by 100 h/s that's a 3rd extra so helps.
im stupid with computers, i followed your instructions to mine Mac cpu and now im at the terminal and it is asking me what currency i want to mine how do i answer?
Probably Monero, but... well it depends what currency you want to mine. Like what pool are you using and which currency is it for.
