Can't get started

Hello,

I'm totally new to this. I've set it up to FabulousPanda's pool, but when I start I get this message:

dyld: Library not loaded: /Applications/MacMiner.app/Contents/Resources/curl/lib/libcurl.4.dylib

Referenced from: /Users/kathrynevans/Downloads/MacMiner.app/Contents/Resources/bfgminer/bin/bfgminer

Reason: Incompatible library version: bfgminer requires version 8.0.0 or later, but libcurl.4.dylib provides version 6.0.0

hmm, I didn't think this should still be happening with 1.5.1 - or are you using the 10.6 version?

The problem will fix itself if you move MacMiner to the Applications folder

Yes, as I am only running OS X 10.6.8 Should I still use a different version?

I've moved MacMiner to the applications folder and the message has stopped, but now it says nothing and doesn't appear to be doing anything

Scrap that it appears to be working now. Though should I use the newer version of MacMiner, or is this the only thing I can run on my computer?

Ah that explains things - if you can upgrade your Mac to a newer version than 10.6 the newer the better, otherwise stick with that version of MacMiner or download 1.5.1 and run it at the command line if you need newer backends

I'm getting a speed of about 1.3 Mh! I think that is pretty pathetically slow from perusing the forum!

Think I might just give up, I was curious about bitcoins and the process of mining and I've learnt a bit, so it wasn't time wasted, but my computer is pretty old and slow at the best of times and I'm totally skint, so it's unlikely to get any faster any time soon! I'm also mildly concerned I might push my cripled computer over the edge!

Yeah that's pretty slow! CPU/GPU mining does pose a risk to hardware so in your position it may be best to leave it be for now…

Good call! How much in bitcoins do people tend to make doing this, if they're half way set up for it?

These days you need a powerful dedicated ASIC device to make a profit mining bitcoins, so it's all down to specific ASIC and purchase date/cost.

I haven't done the maths so much for Litecoin - I wouldn't expect it's profitable but people are still able to cpu/gpu mine it
